Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai displayed exceptional nerve to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic playoff after a topsy-turvy last day of competition.
Rai nailed a crucial birdie from just over eight foot to seal the win, echoing his only previous tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff victory against the same opponent.
Final Round Excitement
The champion started the final round with a single stroke advantage over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.
The challenger edged a stroke ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last green.
Playoff Decider
This led to a playoff at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to take the championship and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even more person. To compete alongside him the last two days was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on your game and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to describe at the moment how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Other Contenders
The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to make up, coming up one shot short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under closing round of 62. It was his best-ever score on the European Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his as well, but his chances of topping the leaderboard were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell hit an excellent final-round seven-under to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australian Daniel Hillier.
