Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about following this lovable family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
