At least 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
