Daughter of Previous South African Leader Jacob G Zuma Rejects Terror-Related Accusations as Trial Commences
The daughter of previous South African Head of State Zuma has denied all charges to terror charges at the start of her legal proceedings in the coastal city of Durban.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being prosecuted over statements she published on social media in the past during fatal unrest in South Africa that came after the detention of her father.
A week of disorder in multiple regions of the country in mid-2021, including plundering and fire-setting, resulted in at least three hundred deceased and resulted in damage worth an estimated $2.8 billion (£2.2 billion).
The defendant has been alleged of inciting this turmoil and confronts allegations of provocation to commit terror acts and public disorder.
Context of the Legal Matter
The protests were centered in the regions of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal and came after the ex-leader's detention for ignoring a court order to testify at an probe into allegations of corruption while he was holding office.
The defendant has always rejected the allegations against her, with her attorney earlier labelling the prosecution's legal argument as weak.
She has also consistently stated the allegations against her were an attempt to resolve political grievances with her parent after he founded his own political party and campaigned against the ruling party.
Endorsement and Court Representation
This was supported by the foundation, which said the case was an "power abuse" and a "systematic campaign" of "politically motivated and familial persecution" against the former president and his relatives.
A handful of supporters from her party, the political party, appeared outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her dad and other group representatives attended the proceedings inside.
The defendant's representatives has maintained that the testimony presented by prosecutors is unconvincing and fails to provide compelling evidence for a conviction.
