Eurovision Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Calculated Tool to Gloss Over Warfare.
An recent term surfaced several months into the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, according to doctors such as child health specialists. Normally, it is unusual for doctors to treat a young patient who has seen the death of their entire family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal about scores of doctors returning from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.
A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that atrocities are continuing. The Israeli government has denied these accusations, just as it denies everything it is implicated in. But while young survivors are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its professed goal of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” Organizers will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, we are told, is what unity looks like.
Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from competing in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is completely different.
A Selective Vision
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Contest Continues Amidst Unimaginable Suffering
Eurovision turns 70 next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it historically embodied. An institution that was originally built on togetherness has devolved into a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
