Hamilton Island, one of the Popular Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Acquired by US Investment Giant.
A major resort island situated on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has established in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
Details of the Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family, pending customary approvals from regulators.
The family released a statement noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the area is developed, including a significant range of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a large on-island community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The late Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and vintner, first bought the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted domestic holidaymakers from the outback and southern states.

Blackstone also owns hotels and luxury resorts in several nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the archipelago on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
