Heavy Downpours Worsen Situation for Uprooted Gazans, Agencies Caution
Persistent rains over the last seven days have intensified the already dire living conditions of the many hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians in the territory, according to humanitarian groups.
"Awful" Night Creates Grave Threats
A spokesman described the weather overnight as "awful", with downpours so severe that up to 15cm (6in) of water was seen on the streets.
"The recent weather was exceptionally horrendous for the people. The heavy rains were so powerful... And the gales were so strong," said the spokesperson.
Officials express significant worry that children sheltering in tents in soaked attire will fall victim to hypothermia and additional sicknesses.
Casualties and Widespread Loss
The health ministry have confirmed that one baby has died from the cold and no fewer than 11 other people have lost their lives in roof cave-ins caused by the storms.
Further statements suggest a increased number of casualties. Spokespeople stated that several residential buildings had totally fallen and scores had been partly destroyed.
- Roughly 55,000 families harmed by the weather.
- More than 40 emergency safe spaces severely flooded.
- Many people compelled to find new shelter.
Assistance Efforts Seen as Inadequate
Organizations have stepped up shipments of tarpaulins, warm covers and clothes since the halt in hostilities began, but they emphasize there is remains not enough aid reaching those in need.
"Officials are striving constantly to deliver that aid and to distribute it, but the size of the requirements is so vast that we still have thousands of people and minors who are truly enduring hardship every night," stated one spokesperson.
Ongoing Challenges and Ceasefire Plans
The second phase of the agreement includes arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with post-war governance, the pullback of military forces, and other provisions.
Relief organizations have underscored the need for "expanded and ongoing aid to respond to pressing and future needs."
The war was triggered by an attack in October 2023. Subsequent military operations have caused a significant number of casualties in the area, based on medical data.
