Pacific Bluefin Fish Commands Unprecedented Bid of $3.2m at Tokyo Auction
A massive bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the calendar year.
The top bid for the 243kg fish came from the parent firm of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which runs outlets across the country and overseas.
"An inaugural tuna brings fortune," remarked the company president, a familiar figure at the annual first sale.
Referred to as the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is renowned for making high bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile January auctions.
Bidding Shock and Record-Setting Precedent
Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to reporters that he was "astonished at the winning bid," stating, "I expected we would be able to acquire it a little for less, but the price escalated before you knew it."
This latest acquisition tops his own historic purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Even after once saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to surpass his personal record once again.
A Tradition of High Prices
The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally associated with exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a different food company, which announced the fish would be featured at its eateries throughout the country.
The frenetic atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has become a must-see tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
Immediate Consumption
The extremely valuable tuna was promptly prepared for customers at the entrepreneur's sushi chains soon after the auction concluded.
"I believe like I've started the year in a auspicious way after tasting something so lucky as the year gets underway," shared one satisfied customer.
