Rob Edwards along with O'Neil represent the initial candidates in the frame to replace Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolves.
Pereira was dismissed on Sunday following the team's ten-game winless start to the top-flight campaign.
And Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have previous links to the club - are part of the options to be considered by the Wolves ownership.
Edwards is presently at another club, which would pose a possible hurdle to his hiring at Molineux.
Nevertheless the former Luton Town head coach - who made more than 100 of games for the club during his playing career - is considered a strong contender for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys backing from the club board as they start the search of appointing a fresh manager.
Gary O'Neil is also appearing as a surprise candidate, although he would be a shock choice considering he was sacked by the club in the previous winter.
The former West Ham player is out of work which means Wolves would not be required to provide any compensation.
