{‘She possesses no expertise’: the US scientific establishment prepares for Høeg's tenure at the Food and Drug Administration.

While the United States proceeds with unprecedented changes to its immunization guidelines, a particular individual has surfaced unexpectedly: Dr. Tracy Beth Høeg, a Danish American physician and public health researcher who initially gained attention by expressing skepticism about Covid vaccinations during the global health crisis and has focused upon alleged fatalities following Covid vaccination in her recent position at the FDA.

Scheduled Shifts to Childhood Vaccine Schedule

Public health authorities planned to unveil radical changes to the pediatric immunization program earlier this month, synchronizing the US with the Danish vaccine program, according to reports – a substantial departure that would put the US out of alignment with a large portion of the international standard with little proof for public health gain. The planned update has been postponed until the coming year.

In place of Vinay Prasad, Høeg is listed to address the audience at the meeting. She was just designated interim head of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), the fifth appointee to lead the center this calendar year.

A Shift at the FDA

Høeg's temporary position could signify a strengthened alliance between the drug and biologics divisions as Høeg and Dr. Prasad strengthen their influence at the agency – and it suggests a greater focus upon reevaluating already-approved vaccines at the FDA.

Høeg has frequently advocated for halting some pediatric immunization guidelines in the US in order to be more similar to Denmark, a society with comprehensive healthcare and a citizenry about the population of Wisconsin’s.

To date public appearances, she has kept her attention on vaccines – usually the domain of Dr. Prasad, head of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) – rather than drug regulation.

Concerns Over Expertise

Dr. Høeg has no obvious experience in pharmaceutical research, regulation or leadership, which has been standard for former leaders of the CBER. She has served at the FDA as a key advisor to the commissioner and the vaccine center since spring.

“She doesn’t seem to have any of the qualifications” for leading the drug-regulation department, said Dr. Jonathan Howard. “She lacks experience running a scientific study. She has no expertise in leading a large organization. She lacks background in pharmaceutical oversight.”

Former heads of the center would “understand regulatory frameworks and the research of drug development”, noted Janet Woodcock. “Clearly, she doesn’t have the type of experience that previous people who headed the center have had.”

This division has an enormous workload at the agency, Woodcock emphasized.

“The public just focuses on the novel medication approvals, but the off-patent medication office authorizes thousands of generic drugs. There’s a biosimilars program, over-the-counter program and so forth, and all of those have to be supervised,” Woodcock explained. “The thing you don’t keep your eye on, that is precisely what that I always told people is going to cause problems.”

Additionally, a substantial leadership aspect to the position, which manages in excess of 5,000 employees. “It is a huge management job, if you perform it correctly,” Woodcock added.

Official Statement and Controversial Programs

When asked about concerns about Høeg’s fitness for the role and whether this appointment represents more teamwork among FDA leaders on immunizations, a spokesperson stated that the “concerns rely on inaccurate presumptions”.

“Her resume matches the functions of her position,” the representative explained, noting the months Dr. Høeg spent guiding the FDA commissioner on “drug safety and regulatory science, including predictive safety algorithms and vaccine surveillance”.

As the temporary head, Dr. Høeg inherits the agency head's new fast-track approval initiative, a controversial rapid drug-approval program that allegedly worried her former heads. “By what process are these therapies being chosen for this fast-track system? Who makes the choices?” Dr. Howard questioned. “There’s a lot of secrecy going on at the regulatory body right now.”

Broadly speaking, he remarked, “the FDA seems to be moving towards more relaxed oversight of most medications, with the exception of vaccines.”

Documented Past Work on Vaccines

With vaccines, Dr. Høeg has a more established, if concerning, track record, some experts have noted. She published a research paper using unconfirmed crowd-sourced reports to assess the frequency of heart inflammation following Covid vaccination. She consulted for the state of Florida chief medical officer Dr. Joseph Ladapo, who reportedly have altered data to indicate Covid vaccinations are riskier than they are.

Part of her “wish list” for the current government included altering guidelines for novel immunizations and discontinuing “non-essential” vaccines, she remarked following the vote on a online show. At the FDA, Dr. Høeg has allegedly suggested preventing adolescent males from receiving Covid vaccines.

“She is an thorough true believer who begins with her conclusions and works backwards to accommodate the evidence in a extremely misleading, untruthful way,” Dr. Howard stated.
