The Chainsaw Man Film Leads American Box Office in Opening Weekend

Did Sony done it again? Coming after the success of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in over $600 million at the box office, the new movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has officially crossed the $100 million milestone worldwide, hitting a international earnings of over $108 million in its opening frame. This movie beat out Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its second weekend in cinemas, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).

Notable American and International Results

Helmed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a direct continuation of Chainsaw Man’s first season. It brought in $18.2M in the U.S. after a robust five-point-two-million-dollar Saturday box office and four-point-five-million-dollar Sunday. Globally, the produced by MAPPA feature grossed $14.7M across 46 global regions, resulting in a global sum of $60.4 million under Sony ($43.1M overseas, $18.2 million stateside). Sony has yet to announce its final earnings figure.

Parallels to Other Anime Hits

Anime marketing agency White Box Entertainment had earlier commented, contrasting the film’s projected performance to the popular film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which grossed $34 million in the North America in the year 2022 and opened to a nearly identical $18M stateside. The new film's opening frame is in line with that standard, while its hundred-and-eight-million-dollar global gross is now positioned a bit short of that movie's over $166 million total earnings. Even if it doesn't seem possible this Chainsaw Man film will earn the numbers of mega hit Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a huge win for the studio.

Promotional Campaigns Drive Success

Sony and its subsidiary Crunchyroll have successfully utilized fan engagement to drive their dominance at the anime box office. The movie's marketing campaign launched at the Anime Expo in LA in the month of July with a MAPPA presentation, unique experiences, and Pochita photo ops, then continued with a notable appearance at NYCC featuring never-before-seen content, lotteries for fans, and additional MAPPA panels. Additionally, there was an special preview for fans for the public and popular figures too after the last day of the convention.

What’s Next

2025 stands as a significant period for Japanese animation, and for the studio, which has one more feature-length anime releasing this year in the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in late this year.
