The Tension and Mental Game Surrounding the Ashes Opening Delivery

Burns Dismissed with his Opening Delivery in the Ashes

The opening ball of a series proves significantly more than merely one delivery.

It represents an nerve-wracking three or four seconds of pure excitement, when all of the pre-series talk ultimately ends.

"To define that tone for the entire series would prove truly remarkable," remarked England bowler Gus Atkinson when asked regarding the possibility recently.

"I'm aware we've witnessed numerous memorable first-ball moments during Ashes history. The opportunity to add to legacy would be incredible."

Like Atkinson explains, the opening ball has produced several of the most iconic Ashes instances - events that appeared to set the narrative and minimum became convenient to reflect upon in hindsight...

Cummins Driving Past Cover Field

Skipper Ben Stokes declared at 393 for 8 shortly before the close during day one of 2023's Ashes series

Zak Crawley dedicated the build-up to 2023's Ashes thinking about striking the first ball to a boundary - regarding wanting to "make a message."

Australia captain Pat Cummins ran in from Edgbaston and the batsman drilled a drive past cover field amid roaring cheers by English crowd.

"I've always been an enormous admirer of the first ball in Ashes cricket," the opener revealed.

"I was watching them since childhood and I knew several of weeks out that if we won coin toss there would be an excellent chance of facing that ball."

"I chatted to Brooky regarding this while we played playing golf on course - saying it would be amazing if I could get the first one away to make a statement."

The English may not have won that contest - while the Australians thrillingly took the opening Test during the final day - but it proved a preview at the way Stokes' side planned to attack during the summer.

Burns and England Dismissed Early

The English were dismissed for 147 runs during day one in 2021's series

This occasion at Birmingham remains among the few opening deliveries that went the way of the English, though.

Much more often they have been ominous indicators of the Australian dominance that would be following.

On the 2021-22 series, Mitchell Starc dismissed England opener Rory Burns via a leg-stump full delivery in Brisbane to become the initial pitcher claiming a wicket on the opening delivery in an Ashes contest after Australian seamer Ernest McCormick in 1936.

The English preparation was lacking and in that point of Aussie celebration England took a punch to their morale.

"My spirit simply plummeted dramatically," recalled bowler Stuart Broad, who was watching in the dressing room.

"We had prepared for this series and bang, opening delivery, he is out."

The Ashes were lost within eleven more days and the Australians claimed the series four-nil.

Slater's Statement Delivery

Michael Slater scored 176 runs during the first innings of 1994's Ashes, after cut the opening ball in the series to boundary

It's also no surprise a skipper who thrived on "psychological warfare" thought proceedings were determined through an identical moment twenty-seven prior.

Steve Waugh and Australia were seeking their fourth Ashes series win in a row as batsman Michael Slater began the 1994-95 contest with decisively driving England bowler Phil DeFreitas to boundary through backward point.

"It was like 'okay team here we go once more we've got them already'," recalled the captain, who'd feature every matches during a 3-1 domestic victory.

"In our minds it was as if we're dominant already so let's just continue pressing on. We know how to beat this team."

Foreboding.

Harmison's Horror Wide

The Australians scored 602-9 declared during the first innings after Harmison's errant delivery, with skipper Ricky Ponting making 196

But what if that ball proves just that - one among ten thousand or more to start the contest?

The wide Steve Harmison delivered to start 2006's Ashes - when he bowled the delivery toward the hands of skipper Andrew Flintoff at the slips, almost missing the cut strip in the process - became the most iconic Ashes series first ball of all.

"I panicked," the bowler told media soon afterwards.

"I allowed the enormity of the occasion overwhelm me. Everything seemed so alien to me. My entire body felt tense."

"I could not get my hands from sweating. The first ball slipped out of my grasp, the next did as well, and, following that, I possessed no control, zero."

England claimed the 2005 series 15 before but were resoundingly defeated 5-0. Some argue those Ashes ended in that very moment.

"We simply weren't good enough to defeat
